🎮Game Basics
What is the Imposter game?
Imposter is a social deduction party game where everyone sees the same secret word — except one person (the imposter). Players give one-word clues to prove they know the word, and then vote on who they think is faking it. It's like Werewolf meets 20 Questions, perfect for parties and family game nights.
How many players do you need to play Imposter?
Imposter works best with 3-10 players. The minimum is 3 players (so there's enough people to have meaningful discussion), and the maximum is 10 for optimal gameplay. With more players, the imposter has more clues to learn from but also more people trying to catch them!
Is the Imposter game free?
Yes! Imposter is completely free to download and play on iOS. There are no hidden fees, no subscription required, and no account needed. Just download the app, gather your friends, and start playing immediately.
How do you win as the Imposter?
The imposter wins by either: (1) Not getting caught during the voting phase, or (2) Correctly guessing the secret word if they do get caught. Strategy tips: Listen to other players' clues before giving yours, give confident but vague clues, and actively participate in discussions to blend in.
How do you catch the Imposter?
Watch for: hesitation when giving clues, overly generic clues that could apply to anything, nervous body language, and people who wait to give their clue last (to hear others first). Ask follow-up questions like 'Why did you choose that clue?' — imposters often struggle to explain their reasoning.
🧠Strategy & Tips
Can you play Imposter online with friends?
Imposter is designed as a pass-and-play party game where everyone shares one device in person. This creates hilarious moments as you watch people's reactions! For remote play, you could screen share via video call and have one person operate the app.
What's the difference between Imposter and Among Us?
While both are social deduction games, they're quite different. Among Us is a video game where players complete tasks on a spaceship while imposters secretly eliminate others. Imposter is a word-based party game played in person with one device — no video game skills needed! It's faster, simpler, and better for mixed-age groups.
🆚Imposter vs Other Games
What's the difference between Imposter and Werewolf?
Both are social deduction games, but Imposter is faster and requires no moderator. In Werewolf, players close their eyes and a moderator runs the game over multiple rounds. In Imposter, everyone participates simultaneously through word clues, games last 5-10 minutes, and there's no elimination — everyone plays the whole game.
What age is Imposter appropriate for?
Imposter is suitable for ages 8 and up. The game requires basic reading skills and the ability to think of descriptive words. It's great for family game nights because adults and kids can play together — sometimes kids are even better at catching liars!
⚙️Technical & App Questions
How long does a game of Imposter take?
A single round of Imposter typically takes 5-15 minutes, depending on group size and how much discussion happens. Most groups play multiple rounds, often switching up who ends up as the imposter. The app randomly assigns the imposter each round.
Do I need to create an account to play?
No! Imposter requires no account, no login, and no registration. Just download the free app, open it, and start playing. Your game data stays on your device — we don't collect personal information.
Can I play Imposter offline?
Yes! Once you've downloaded the Imposter app, you can play completely offline. This makes it perfect for road trips, camping, flights, or anywhere without WiFi. No internet connection needed after the initial download.
How are the words/categories chosen?
Imposter includes hundreds of words across various categories like Food, Animals, Places, Movies, Sports, and more. You can select specific categories or let the app choose randomly. The imposter sees the category but not the specific word.
What if there's a tie in voting?
If there's a tie, the tied players have a chance to defend themselves with a final statement, and then another quick vote happens between just the tied players. If it's still tied, the imposter survives that round!
Is Imposter available on Android?
Currently, Imposter is available on iOS (iPhone and iPad). An Android version is planned for the future. Since only one device is needed to play, iOS users can host games that Android users can participate in!
